CAMPUS SUMMARY
Initially established in 1842 as Valley Union
Seminary, a coeducational college, Hollins
became an institution for women in 1852.
Hollins Institute became Hollins College in
1911 and Hollins University in 1998.

Hollins is an independent liberal arts
university dedicated to academic excellence
and humane values. Hollins University offers
undergraduate liberal arts education for
women, selected graduate programs for men
and women, and community outreach
initiatives. The Hollins curriculum and
cocurricular programs prepare students for
lives of active learning, fulfilling work, personal
growth, achievement, and service to society.

Located in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia, a
New York Times Book Review described the
Hollins campus as "...achingly picturesque,
with brick halls and frame buildings
surrounded by riding stables, tennis courts
and hockey fields and bisected by a mountain
stream. The college’s main building features
a long gallery porch overlooking a
picture-perfect college quad; warm afternoons
find groups of students and faculty contentedly
rocking in the porch’s two dozen rocking
chairs, talking, reading or thinking."

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Hollins is a distinguished national liberal arts
university, with nationally recognized
programs in creative writing, art, dance and
psychology. Hollins emphasizes liberal arts
as the education of ultimate importance and
practicality that helps young women prepare
for careers through internships, independent
study and research, study abroad, community
service, and leadership experiences. Hollins offers six master of arts degrees. They are the master of fine arts in creative writing and dance(M.F.A.), the master of arts in children's literature, and in screenwriting and film studies (M.A.), the master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.), and the interdisciplinary master of arts in liberal studies (M.A.L.S.).

Producing more award-winning writers than
any creative writing program of comparable
size, Hollins has received national acclaim for
the works of its graduates and for its
distinctive approach to teaching. The Fiske
Guide to Getting Into the Right College lauds
Hollins as one of 15 "small colleges and
universities strong in art and design." The
Hollins Repertory Dance Company, which is
closely affiliated with the American Dance
Festival, has been selected from a field of
strong competitors to perform at the Kennedy
Center and at Aaron Davis Hall, Harlem's
premier performing arts center.
